Which taxis accept Cabcharge in Melbourne?
Here is the short answer, because it is the question most people arrive with. We accept Cabcharge on every booking, without exception: cards, digital passes and eTickets, on airport transfers, city work and regional runs alike. Payment is made to the driver at the end of the trip, exactly as it would be in any licensed Melbourne taxi.
The question gets asked at all because acceptance is not guaranteed across the industry. It comes down to the operator, and to the individual driver having the terminal and the right paperwork with them on the day, which is why hailing one off the street can go either way. Booking ahead removes the guesswork. When the trip is booked with us the payment method is recorded on the job, so the driver arrives already knowing Cabcharge is being used.
Because the fare is fixed and quoted before you travel, the amount going through your Cabcharge account is known in advance. That makes it easier to code against a project or cost centre than a metered fare that lands somewhere unpredictable.
How Cabcharge works, step by step
- Book the trip. Choose Cabcharge as the payment method when you book, so it is on the job before a driver is assigned.
- Travel. Nothing is charged when you book and nothing is taken up front.
- Pay at the end. Hand the driver the card, or give them the reference from your digital pass or eTicket.
- Reconcile. The trip appears on your Cabcharge account with the fare you were quoted, so there is nothing to chase afterwards.
Cards, digital passes and eTickets
A physical Cabcharge card is handed to the driver at the end of the trip. A digital pass or eTicket needs no card at all: you give the driver the reference, usually from the email or message the pass arrived in. Either works on any booking with us, and neither changes the fare.
If you are not certain which one your organisation issues, it makes no difference to the booking. Book the trip, then present whichever you hold when you arrive.
Who uses it
- Corporate travel. Staff get to the airport without carrying company cash or filing an expense claim for every trip.
- Government and public sector. Cabcharge is the standard for a lot of departmental travel, and every trip is traceable.
- NDIS participants. Travel that sits within your approved transport supports.
- TAC clients. Medical and rehabilitation appointments covered by an approved TAC claim.
Setting up an account
If your organisation already holds a Cabcharge account, nothing needs to be arranged with us. Book the trip and present the card, pass or eTicket to the driver.
If you book regularly for a team and would rather receive a monthly invoice than pay per trip, call us and we will set that up. It suits businesses booking several airport runs a month, and it removes the reconciliation work at the other end.
What the driver needs
For a card, the physical card at the end of the trip. For a digital pass or eTicket, the reference from your booking confirmation. If the trip is being billed to an account rather than paid on the day, mention it when you book so the driver has the right paperwork before pickup rather than sorting it out at the kerb.
