What it gives you over a standard sedan is the boot, 4 large and 3 small bags against 2 large and 2 small, and a good deal more legroom.
If you need the seats rather than the space, the vehicle you want is the maxi. It seats up to eleven, takes 8 large bags, and carries the same $17.80 surcharge as the SUV, so choosing it over a seven seater costs you nothing extra. We would rather tell you that here than have you meet a four seater at the kerb at 5am.
What a Seven Seater Costs
The SUV and wagon class is priced the same way as every other vehicle we run, a flag fall, a rate per kilometre and the toll on the real driving distance, with a flat $17.80 high occupancy surcharge on top. That is the same surcharge the maxi carries, which is why the maxi is the better call the moment you are over four people.
The surcharge does not scale with distance. On a short run from Essendon it is the same $17.80 as it is on a long run from Geelong, so the further you travel the smaller a share of the fare it becomes. Here is what that comes to on four real routes, taken from the same fare engine the booking form above uses.
- Melbourne CBD to Melbourne Airport, 22.7 km, $79 to $97.
- Tarneit to Melbourne Airport, 30.9 km, $91 to $111.
- Clayton to Melbourne Airport, 47.2 km, $139 to $170.
- Berwick to Melbourne Airport, 70 km, $190 to $232.
Against two standard sedans for the same group it is still the cheaper trip, and everybody arrives together.
Room and Luggage
The SUV takes 4 large and 3 small bags against 2 large and 2 small in a standard sedan, and the maxi takes 8 large. The boot is the entire reason to book an SUV. If you are four people with four big cases, or two people with skis, a pram and a fortnight’s worth of luggage, this is your vehicle.
When it is the right call
- Four adults with checked luggage. A sedan takes 2 large and 2 small bags. Four large cases is a squeeze and someone ends up with a bag on their lap. The SUV takes 4 large and 3 small.
- Families with a pram. Prams travel free and do not count towards luggage, but they take real boot space. The SUV absorbs that without argument.
- Golf clubs, skis, instruments. Anything long goes in far more easily.
- A long regional run. Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo or the Yarra Valley with a full boot, where the extra room matters for two hours rather than twenty minutes.
SUV or Maxi?
Both carry the same flat $17.80 surcharge, so this is not a price decision at all. It is a simple one: four passengers or fewer, take the SUV. Five or more, take the maxi, which seats up to eleven and takes 8 large bags. Since the surcharge is identical, there is never a reason to squeeze a fifth person into an SUV to save money, because it saves you nothing.
If you are unsure, tell us the passenger count and roughly how many bags when you book and we will allocate the right vehicle. Getting this wrong at the kerb at 5am is nobody’s idea of a good start.
