Which Terminal Is International at Melbourne Airport?

Terminal 2 (T2) is the international terminal at Melbourne Airport. Every international flight, from every airline, arrives at and departs from T2. This includes the international flights of Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar, even though their domestic flights use other terminals.

All international airlines use T2. If you are flying to or from another country, you go to T2, whichever airline you fly with. Domestic flights use T1 (Qantas), T3 (Virgin Australia) and T4 (Jetstar and Rex), so always check whether your flight is domestic or international.

Where Is Terminal 2 at Melbourne Airport?

T2 is in the middle of the main airport building, between T1 on one side and T3 on the other. The airport is about 23 km northwest of the Melbourne CBD, and the main route is the Tullamarine Freeway.

Inside T2, the levels are simple:

  • Level one: departures and check in
  • Ground floor: arrivals, baggage claim and the pickup area

T1, T2 and T3 are in the same building, so you can walk between T2 and the other two terminals. T4 is a separate building next door.

Getting to Terminal 2 (T2)

  • Taxi: The taxi rank is directly outside international arrivals. If you book in advance, give your flight number. We track your flight, so your driver works to your actual landing time.
  • SkyBus: The pickup point is about 50 metres from T2. It runs to Southern Cross Station in the city.
  • Car: Follow the Tullamarine Freeway to the airport and the signs for T2. Parking and drop off areas are close to the terminal.

There is no train to Melbourne Airport.

Is There a Lounge Access Option at Melbourne Airport’s International Terminal?

Yes. T2 has lounges for several international airlines. Access depends on your ticket and status. You can usually get in if you:

  • Fly business or first class with an airline that has a lounge
  • Have a frequent flyer status that includes lounge access
  • Hold a membership or pass that the lounge accepts

Some lounges also let you pay for a single visit, but this depends on the lounge and how busy it is. Lounge rules and prices change, so check with your airline or the lounge before you travel. Lounges are only available after security and passport control, so you cannot use them before you check in.

Services Inside T2

T2 has more services than the domestic terminals. You will find:

  • Currency exchange and ATMs
  • Shops that sell local SIM cards
  • Luggage storage and luggage wrapping
  • Shower facilities
  • Prayer rooms
  • Parents’ rooms and baby change facilities
  • Cafes, restaurants and duty free shops

Connecting From a Domestic Flight

If you land at T1, T3 or T4 and then fly out of T2, you must change terminals. Each terminal has its own security, so you cannot walk straight through.

You leave the terminal you landed in and walk to T2. From T1 or T3, this takes about 10 minutes or less. From T4, allow about 10 minutes more. At T2, you check in on level one, then go through security and passport control. If your flights are on separate tickets, you must collect your bags and check them in again.

When to Arrive at T2

Arrive at least 3 hours before departure for an international flight. Check in, bag drop, security and passport control all take longer than for a domestic flight. Allow extra time during the morning and evening peaks, on school holidays and on long weekends. If you are driving or taking a taxi from the CBD, remember that traffic can add 30 minutes or more.

Conclusion

T2 is the international terminal at Melbourne Airport. It sits in the middle of the main building, with check in on level one and arrivals on the ground floor. It has lounges for international airlines, plus shops and services. Always check your ticket before you leave, arrive at least 3 hours early, and give your driver your flight number so you are picked up at the right place.
